What can individual citizens do to reduce groundwater pollutants?

Groundwater forms a very important source of water that human use for domestic and industrial purposes. For this reason, individuals should take considerable measures to help reduce the pollution of underground water (Stephnson, 2015).  One measure that can be taken to reduce groundwater pollution is by proper disposal of all waste and avoiding disposal of chemicals on the ground or through sewerage pipes. This type of waste sips down the ground and ends up polluting groundwater. Individual citizens should also reduce the use of chemical fertilizers in their farms as overuse of these chemicals might end up polluting groundwater at the end (Stephnson, 2015). 

Topic 2: What are the major point and nonpoint sources of water pollution in your community?

Water can be polluted through point and nonpoint sources. Nonpoint-water source pollution results from precipitation, land runoff, atmospheric deposition, drainage contaminating the water, seepage, or through hydrologic modification. In my community, this type of water pollution happens a lot (Stephnson, 2015). For instance, we have many industries in my home area and this pollutes the air through gas emission from their manufacturing plants. When the rain falls, the raindrops are mixed with these toxic gases forming what is known as acid rain. Nonpoint source pollution happens in an industrialized society. Many manufacturing plants pollute water when they dump their waste materials in rivers or in lakes (Stephnson, 2015).

Topic 3: In your area, which type of water source (surface water or groundwater) is more important? Explain.

In my community, the main source of water is surface water. My area has two main rivers that cut across my county and the government has put in considerable measures to tap this water and ensure that it serves the local community (Stephnson, 2015). There is one man-made dam that helps collect water from the two rivers. This waster is then treated making it good for human consumption.
