Situation

                  The struggle to go against the system can be difficult. This can create conflict between the parties involved. As a football coach, I have experienced situations that required me to challenge other teachers as well as administrators. I had a student athlete that had a rough home life and struggled academically. The student was given an extremely low grade on their report card during the quarter. When he learned his eligibility was at risk, he committed to improving his grades. He made b’s and c’s the next two quarters drastically improving his grades.  The grade the student received in the first quarter was so low that he could not recover even if he got all A’s. I went to the administration about the issue and a meeting occurred with administration, the teacher, the student, his guardian, and me. In the meeting we discussed the situation and reached an agreement that would benefit all students. The student remained ineligible for the season, but the administration decided to put a grade cap of 60 for a failure grade on report cards moving forward. If a student failed a quarter and worked hard to pull their grades up, they still can pass the class. I have always tried to advocate for the interests of the student. Coaching has provided me with a unique opportunity to get to know families. It provides me with insight into student’s home life and some struggle because of their victims of circumstances.  

Authentic Leadership Self-Assessment

            One of the characteristics of authentic leaders is their humility, evident in their ability to take off their glasses and examine the lens objectively analyzing how well their values, perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors with true north principle (Covey 1991, p.20). The Authentic leadership self-assessment focuses on measuring the components that comprise authenticity of the leader and utilizes numbers to determine the effectiveness of the leader in each assessment areas. I scored high on self-awareness, internal moral perspective, and relational transparency. My lowest score was in the area of balance processing. In the situation discussed earlier my self-awareness and internal moral perspective. The situation was an issue that I felt morally compelled to push for change. My awareness allowed me to view the situation objectively and advert from following the status quo.

Characteristic of Principle Centered Leadership

            The PCL principles that relate to this particular situation my belief in others and the ability to be synergistic. Synergy is the state in which the whole is more than the sum of the parts (Covey 1991 p.37). The situation was one that require a commitment in all stakeholder to devise a solution that would appease all parties involved. The issue needed to be resolved so it wouldn’t occur again in the future. The goal was to resolve the issue for the whole group not just the individual. These two principles aligned perfectly provide insight into my thought process as a leader.
