Situation

    As a teacher a large amount of my students struggle with disabilities. However, it is widely known that most schools struggle to reach these students because of lack of the proper professionals or correct resources. I decided it must be something I can do to ensure these students get the best version of “me” that I can give. So I researched conferences, resources, and other tools I could use for these students. Now I am big on being a “student”. I feel there is so much I can always learn. The fact that I had to study all of the information I gathered, did not bother me one bit. I took what I learned and I shared it with my colleagues. We wanted to keep a running record of what we were doing or implementing to be sure it worked. The results were great! We had students engaged, ready to learn, and actually thriving! I just wanted us all to do our best to make sure these students received beneficial accommodations or interventions.

Self-Reporting Instrument

     After taking the Authentic Leadership Self-Assessment Questionnaire, it revealed why my situation was so important to me. I have a strong sense of self-awareness and internalized moral perspective. I could not go day after day, knowing that there could be more I could be doing for that group of students. I made it my mission to find the best ways to reach them. Although I was aware there was a problem and it bothered me, morally it stuck with me too. I always feel as I though I must be the one to bring change, especially good changes. So often students slip through the cracks, and I just could not stand by and let that happen. 
Influential PCL Characteristics

  According to Covey “I do not feel built up when I discover the weakness of others. I believe in the unseen potential of all people” (Covey, 1991). This is a true statement. Knowing that I had colleagues that had not learned what I learned, did not make me feel like a better teacher. I wanted to make sure my team would be fully prepared. I knew that they could learn just like I had. I also knew my students could do what I needed them to all along. I truly believe, even today, that our minds are tools we control.
