The seven elements of art are:

Color — Also known as hue. There are six basic colors on the color wheel.

Form — The three-dimensional shape of an object.

Line — A mark that goes across a distance between two points.

Shape — A two-dimensional object. The five elements of shape include the circle family, the dot family, the straight line family, the curved line family, and the angle line family.

Space — The area in a piece of artwork. There is positive space and negative space.

Texture — The quality of a surface. A texture can be real or invented.

Value/Tone — Refers to how light or dark something is.

The eight principles of design are:

Balance — the principle that gives weight to all parts of the artwork. Different types of balance would be symmetrical (mirror image), asymmetrical (not a mirror image), and radial (round).

Proportion — how large or small parts of a picture are in relation to each other.

Unity — how well the elements of art are combined together.

Variety — when you have different shapes, forms, or other elements in your artwork.

Movement — shows action in your artwork.

Rhythm — created by using patterns in your artwork.

Harmony — how well the elements of art go together in your artwork.

Contrast/Emphasis — showing differences in your artwork.

For this assignment you will create images with elements and principles of design. Here are your assignment instructions:

· Your assignment is to create 5 images in total.
***PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU TOOK ALL OF THE IMAGES YOU SUBMIT FOR YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENTS. ***

· Each image you create should include at least 1 of the above elements of art and at least 1 of the principles of design.

· You will need to explain for each image why it matches that element of art and principle of design. You will also answer why you chose those to incorporate into your photographs.

· You will also need to explain what technical aspects you used to create the images. (f-stop, shutter speed, rule of thirds, composition, etc.)

· Please write a minimum of 3 sentences.

· Editing your images is not necessary unless you want to.

· It will be best to either put all images and explanations in one Microsoft Word Doc, Google Doc or Google Slides.

If you need a review on camera basics, go back and look at Lesson 2.2, 2.3, and 2.5 for reference.

Here is an example. This is an image by Richard Avedon that we looked at in our unit.

Richard Avedon is using
texture as his element of art. The face shows varying
textures, and this is due to him using
technical aspects of a larger f-stop to make a more detailed image. Avedon is using
contrast as his principle of design. The stark differences in the white background and the subject creates
contrast.

Checklist:

❐ Submit five different photographs that you took.

❐ Each photograph needs to be labeled with a different element and principle of design that is present in the photograph.

❐ Discuss how each image shows the element and principle.

*You may do this in google slides; each slide will have an image, state the element and principle of design, and discuss how each of those is present in the image.
