Review your classmates’ post and assume the role of a staff member in the meeting and answer the following questions:
1. As a staff member, do you agree with their recommendations? If not, why?
1. What could have made their recommendations better or easier to support as a staff member?
1. If there was an advocacy plan, do you think this approach would work? If you were in the meeting, would you support the initiative?
PEERS POST:
Hello Everyone,
Policy #1: Instruction will not change from student to student. All students are to be treated like equals and instructions will not be modified under any circumstances. Oftentimes in life accommodations aren’t made and we want to set our children up for success.
This policy is unethical, research shows that children learn differently and at a different pace.
NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct I-4.5—To work to ensure that appropriate assessment systems, which include multiple sources of information, are used for purposes that benefit children. NAEYC code of Ethical Conduct P-4.11-When policies are enacted for purposes that do not benefit children, we have a collective responsibility to work to change these policies. (NAEYC, 2011) Through observations, assessments, and documentation I would advocate for the children and families that may have some type of learning disabilities and/or challenges with learning. Lesson plans do not have to change but teachers can make adjustments to the curriculum so that all students are able to participate in activities. Our goal as educators is to help assist children to reach certain milestones and succeed.
Policy #2: On water day, each kid must have a pair of water shoes that are rubber bottoms and purchased by the parents. If the child does not have them, they are not allowed to engage with water play and must remain in the classroom while their peers are outside.
This policy is unethical, a child should not be punished and unable to participate in an activity. According to Gadzikowsk ( 2018), the most successful strategies for managing change is to seek collaboration with all the individuals and groups who will be affected (Bloom,2005). Administrators can encourage collaboration and active participation in the change process by sharing information that makes the reason for the change transparent and by making the change very clear. Collaboration also means providing opportunities for staff and families to contribute ideas and be involved in decision making. (Chapter10, para. 4)
If parents are not able to provide water shoes for their child for whatever reason, then I would talk with the administration team and suggest that parents bring in an extra pair of shoes that the child could wear and play in, and they could leave shoes at the facility during the duration of water play. I would place wet shoes in a designated area to dry out. I would reach out to families through the parent’s link to see if they have any questions or concerns.
