Literary Criticism (Good People)

Expressive literary is heavily present in the good people story elementarily in communicating the societal gap in expressing perceived feelings and thoughts and mainly with Lane (Kelley 324). Ability to express feelings in the story leads to the thought of lonely single parenthood, something contrary to the Christian beliefs, values and also social image tarnishing. In various instances in the story, Lane and Cherry fail to share their true feelings and thoughts as Christians regarding their love affection (Douglas 550). The two have a strong perception of betrayal leading them to a sin territory, which limits their degree of expression. Severally, Lane was narrated to avoid direct eye contact with Cherry due to his inability to express his feelings that he was not affectionately in love with her. For instance, lane freezes in silence being fully aware of the pregnancy and still unable to clearly express his limited affection for Cherry.
Again, ethical criticism is present in the life experiences of Lane and Cherry in Christian dimensions. In the story, the characters mention several biblical quotes as Lane expresses a feeling of failure in abiding by the Christian teachings (Kelley 328). As prayerful young people with a strong Christian foundation, Lane and Cherry opt to meet away from related setting and prefers a picnic beside the lake typically showing dissociation from values expected from Christians. For instance, both Lane and Cherry feel guilty, curse their actions and even question ‘what they became’ since it fell outside ethical expectations as Christians (Douglas 557). Again, Lane sees himself as a hypocrite depicting his guiltiness.
