CLASS # 15461

INFORMATIVE SPEECH: TUESDAY, SEPT. 13, 1:30 PM-4:30 PM in E3-568A.

STUDENTS MUST PREPARE AND DELIVER A 5 MINUTE INFORMATIVE SPEECH.

All students need to look for an informative speech topic that is either

A) a new technological advance/invention. For
example: hydrogen cars, new high tech military weapons, or and new
tech discovery/advance.

or B) a medical advance. For example: A new Cure for
Cancer, New psychological treatments, or new medications etc.

THE SPEECH SHOULD HAVE AN ATTENTION GETTING DEVICE AS WELL AS AN
EFFECTIVE CONCLUSION.

THE SPEECH SHOULD BE DIVIDED INTO 5 MAIN POINTS

1) INTRODUCTION 2) RESEARCH ORIGINS 3) CURRENT APPLICATIONS 4)
FUTURE APPLICATIONS 5) CONCLUSION

THE SPEECH MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF 5 SOURCES (NEWSPAPERS AND
MAGAZINES, ONLY 1 INTERNET SOURCES) THE SOURCES SHOULD BE IN
PARENTHESIS IN THE OUTLINE YOU TURN IN.

If an article is published in the New York Times online, it is also published in the
hard copy. Just site it like a regular published source (According to the New York
Times January 10, 2021).

No one, including me, will know the difference if you cite the source properly.

What you don’t want to do is say according to thenewyorktimes.com.

Honestly, I don’t want students to site more than one website. So no more than
one url source. If a published magazine is also online it’s fine, just site it like a
hard copy publication. The date listed with the article is the date it was published
in hard copy.

I just don’t want students siting 10 random website that, for all we know, could be
giving completely false information. I could buy a domain name right now and say
anything I want about anything. There’s just no way to verify the legitimacy of
random websites. The Harvard Medical Journal is also a hard cover publication
that is also published online.

STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO USE A VISUAL AIDE.

EACH STUDENT MUST TURN IN A 2 PAGE SPEECH OUTLINE THROUGH THE
ASSIGNMENT IN CANVAS. STUDENTS SHOULD PROVIDE AS MUCH DETAIL IN
THE OUTLINE AS POSSIBLE. STUDENTS MUST USE COMPLETE SENTENCES
ETC. SOURCES MUST ALSO BE INCLUDED IN PARENTHESIS INSIDE THE
OUTLINE. PLEASE REFER TO THE EXAMPLE INFO OUTLINES POSTED UNDER
FILES.

ROBOTIC SURGERY

I.
Introduction

A.
Attention Getting Device

When we become sick, we usually go to the doctor and get checked up. But, now

imagine if one day all doctors and surgeons become robots. This day will come eventually as technology is advancing everyday. The haunting question is will you trust them to treat you when your life is on the line? Some may find it acceptable; however, others may think that it is absurd to depend on a machine to save their life.

B.
Link to Topic

One hundred percent hands on human surgeon may have a better credibility to a patient than a robotic performing surgeon, but humans make mistakes and errors in the surgery room that can be fatal. To avoid putting patients’ lives at risk more robotic surgeries are being used everyday.

C.
Thesis Statement

Those similar events are still occurring and according to

(KSAT 12
, on May 24, 2019)

Dr. Christopher J. DeWald who said

robotic surgery are safer, and better…” for this generation.

D.
Preview

To understand why robotic surgery became an idea, we must first explore the origins and history of surgery. Secondly, I will tell you about the current application being used today as trials and experiments. Finally, I will analyze the future application, benefits and possible drawbacks.

(Transition: Before I begin to talk about robotic surgery, let’s go back for a moment and start with the history of surgery.)

II.
History

A. According to the

(Surgical Endoscopy on March 1998)
the surgeons stated that “needle driving skill appeared to be essentially the same as needed for open surgery.” More than a hundred years ago surgery was done with a knife and a set of hands, but many died during the process because of the lack of medical supplies. By 1998, surgery has improved to smaller open surgery and much improved medical safety procedures.

B. According to the

(Surgical Endoscopy on March 1998)
the surgeons also stated that “Laparoscopic skills which require two-hand coordination (M,T) were significantly improved by hands-on training. Hands-on training is an effective format particularly for laparoscopic skills in which two-hand coordination is essential.” By introducing a new form of surgery technique called the laparoscopic, having surgery is a much safer operation than an open surgery now.

C. According to

(

Diana Gerhardus

’s article,

Journal of Healthcare Management

in 2003)
she “focuses on robot-assisted surgery of messages to patients, physicians, and hospitals … embrace this technology for strategic positioning a possible rise for robots in medicine on machine assist.”

(Transition: Now that we have a better understanding of surgery, let’s look at the breakthrough technology of robotic surgery that will ultimately provide better benefits to these patients.)

III.
Current Applications

A. According to

(Mayo Clinic on January 30, 2019)
using robotic surgery will have fewer complications, such as surgical site infection, less pain and blood loss where as if they are still using open surgery the result will be the vice versa.

B. Also with the use of robotic surgery, patient may have quicker recovery, smaller, less noticeable scars so they can still feel confident about their body figure.

C. According to

(

Cathy Dyson’s article from Fredericksburg)

the robotic system, which allows for more precise cuts, shorter recovery times and a less invasive procedure—even though doctors still had to yank, push and pull to take out …

the implant.

(Transition: Now that you know much more about robotic surgery, let’s look at availability, future benefits and possible drawbacks.)

IV.
Future Application / Possible Drawbacks

A.
Future Application

1. Using a fully robotic surgery system can reduce medical costs for patients since less surgeons are operating the surgery. Once the surgery machine is purchased, it can be used for a long time.

B.
Possible Drawbacks

1. According to

(News Scientist on June 12, 2019 by Ruby Prosser Scully)
“The UK’s National Health Service recently announced plans to spend £50 million on more robotic surgical equipment for operating theatres, and yet the benefits of this high-tech approach are debated” One of the major drawbacks is the expensive high cost of owning the item and a large investment will be needed for it. Overall by discussing about robotic surgery on the future applications and possible drawbacks you can imagine the successful or the failing rate of this technique.

(Transition: After learning about the origins and applications of robotic surgery, let’s step back and review the main points.)

V.
Conclusion

A. Today, I have informed you on the origins of surgery and how they came to be a part of robotic surgery, followed by its’ current usage in the medical field. As you can see, clearly there are many people around the world who needs to perform surgery at least once in their lifetime and the ongoing experiments has benefited most patients.

B. Although if robots really replaces real human doctors and surgeons, there will still be real physician training and providing services to the robots to serve patients.

C. Lastly, the development of robotic surgery may not be as bad as it sounds to some people, but only time and the future of technology can tell us the answer.

Introduction

Attention Getting Story

In the 1985, movie Back To the Future staring Michael J Fox as Marty Mcfly and Christopher Lloyd as Doctor Emmet Brown. There is a scene where Marty goes back in time to the year 1955 and is stuck in the past and needs Doctor Brown’s help to go back to 1985. Well in this scene Marty goes to Doc’s house and tells him that he is his only hope to help send him back to 1985. Marty shows a video of Doc about the information of the Delorean’s way to use the time machine and travel thru time. Doc says in the video that the Delorean is “electrical and that he need the 1.21 gig watts of electricity harness the energy needed” to go thru time. Marty tells Doc that all they need is a simple Plutonium, but Doc says that it is impossible to find plutonium in 1955 and that Marty is stuck. Doc tells Marty that the only way to produce 1.21 Gig Watts of electricity is a bolt of lightning. Marty then realizes about the bolt of lightning that is going to strike the clock tower next Saturday night at 10:04 PM. Doc stands up from his chair and says “this is it!” “This is the answer” to harness the bolt of lightning and channel it into the Delorean and easily send Marty back to the future to 1985…

B
Link To Topic

The bolt of lightning is a great source of powerful energy for the Delorean Time Travel Machine but there is another powerful energy that is even greater than the bolt of lightning that Doc Brown figured out to send Marty Back to the Future and it is the sun. MIT’s Dan Nocera and his team have found a new and efficient way to Store Solar Energy in your own home. Dan Nocera has figured out a way of breaking Hydrogen and Oxygen in a catalyst to store a great amount of solar energy from the sun like a charger battery that works continuously without end at night when the sun is not available to power electricity in your house at night without the need of the sun to power the solar panels that need the sun to power the electricity needed in the house. Solar Energy At Home History

Photovoltaic’s and Electrochemistry

a
Photovoltaic cell is the device that converts light directly into electrical

energy. (MICROSOFT ENCARTA ENCYCLOPEDIA, 1998) The photovoltaic is what

people call solar panels on roofs of buildings developed in 1954 by Bell Laboratories it is
made out of silicon. Light strikes a solar cell, positive and negative charges are produced

and they are separated and collected, in a process similar to a battery that runs on a Direct
Current or (DC). This can be then used directly and stored to serve in a variety of energy

needs. (SOLAR ENERGY: TODAYS TECHNOLOGIES FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE, 1997)

b
Electrochemistry is the process that is the study of a chemical reactions that produce electrical current in water producing currents or voltages. (MICROSOFT ENCARTA ENCYCLOPEDIA, 1998

Nocera’s New Technology Come About How The Oxygen and Hydrogen work

B
Nocera’s find of the Experiment

a
Nocera has found a new method of splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen done thru a catalyst of also formally known as electrolysis. (POPULAR MECHANICS, 2008)

b
The catalyst is a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen gases at room temperature that do not explode. The oxygen atoms then react rapidly with hydrogen molecules, colliding with them, forming water, and regenerating the catalyst. The reaction is called the reaction mechanism. (MICROSOFT ENCARTA ENCYCLOPEDIA, 1998)

II

Fuel Cell

a
Hydrogen Fuel Cell produce no pollution or greenhouse emissions (ENERGY

ALTERNATIVES, 2007)

b.
Chemical reaction takes place as hydrogen enters the fuel cell, splitting the

electrons off the hydrogen molecules to produce electricity that powers the

catalyst from the energy from the solar panels. (ENERGY ALTERNATIVES,

Conclusion

A
Now that I have spoken about first the origins of solar energy, secondly the

current applications of trials an experiment breakthrough by Nocera and lastly the future applications and possible drawbacks toward the future design of the hydrogen and oxygen tanks connected to the fuel cell and catalyst which is crucial to the major breakthrough that Nocera still needs to accomplish and put into more trails…

B
Remember the story I told you about the scene in Back to The Future when Doctor Emmett Brown figures out how to send Marty McFly back home to 1985 using the bolt of lightning from the clock tower.

C
I can relate it to Dan Nocera’s major discovery in the splitting of the hydrogen from the water using electrolysis which was a simple high school experiment done in high school. Nocera states that his experiment was so easy that the discovery Nocera did with the solar energy is that it can use minimum energy from the fuel cell box that is connected to the solar panels in the home using the energy from the sun to make solar power making a new and convenient way toward efficient homes in the future.

D
A quote that gives hope for Dan Nocera’s new breakthrough that will hopefully come true on storing solar energy in your own home and will be for millions of people worldwide, I quote Marty Mcfly telling his own father George McFly in the scene where George faces the obstacle to ask Lorraine to the dance George says to Marty “you make it sound so easy I just wish I wasn’t so scared!” and Marty tells George “ All it takes is a little self confidence you know, If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything !”
