Compare the quantitative and qualitative research in healthcare service

Quantitative research focuses on the breadth of study of a phenomenon while qualitative research focuses on the depth of the study of a phenomenon (Borgstede & Scholz, 2021). These are elements that are critical in underscoring the influence that both research methods have on the outcome of the research. While the two answer distinctly separate questions of research, it is noteworthy that qualitative analysis can be undertaken before a quantitative impact of a single phenomenon on a larger geography is assessed and influenced (Borgstede & Scholz, 2021).  Therefore, it is true that both can be used to find a response to one question, in a form called the mixed research method.

In quantitative research, numerical data is preferred because the analysis is done on measures of central tendency, various aspects of regression analysis, and various formulations of different positions presented in building and promoting the breadth of the research (Borgstede & Scholz, 2021). On the other hand, in qualitative research, information is recorded in narrative format to provide a depth analysis of a single phenomenon as a representation of the larger issue. This is both critical and progressive in adapting to the long-term assessment of the scenarios presented for the illustrative data being considered (Borgstede & Scholz, 2021). Nonetheless, the evaluation of both data is present in building and promoting the outcome of the data.

In quantitative data, it is important to underscore the impact of collecting larger volumes of data because the variables presented in each volume differ (Borgstede & Scholz, 2021). Moreover, the fact that the variations of data can lead to poor or inaccurate results implies that the general influence of the data is built through effective analysis of the collected information. On the other hand, in qualitative analysis, it is important to be aware of the bias in observations and other forms of qualitative data collection and therefore plans to counter them (Borgstede & Scholz, 2021).

Qualitative research is used to learn about the underlying reasoning, attitudes, and motivations of people. It helps in the development of a problem-solving strategy and a hypothesis for a future quantitative study. This study also aids in the discovery of ideas and viewpoints. Unstructured and semi-structured procedures are used to acquire qualitative data. Group talks, individual interviews, participation, and observation are some of the approaches used. According to QRCA, qualitative research can be used to “Investigate current or potential product/service/brand positioning and marketing strategy, strengths and weaknesses of products/brands, understanding dynamics of purchase decision dynamics, etc.” (QRCA, 2020).

Quantitative research generates numerical data or data that may be turned into useable statistics to quantify a problem. It’s used to quantify people’s views, opinions, and behaviors, as well as to extrapolate results from a broader sample population. Some examples of quantitative data collection are Internet surveys, mobile surveys, paper surveys, face-to-face interviews, phone interviews, longitudinal studies, online polls, website interceptors, and systematic observations.

Some types of data used in qualitative research are, observations, textual or visual analysis, and interviews. It is selected using questionnaires, case studies, focus groups, etc. it is processed by preparing, organizing, reviewing, exploring, and presenting the data in a cohesive manner.

Some types of data used in quantitative research are measurement, counts, and calculations. It is selected based on theory and hypothesis. It is processed by manipulating and studied as part of hypothesis testing.

Organizations may face several challenges in collecting consistent and quality data. According to the Victorian Government, “Certain challenges include Inconsistent data collection standards, Complexity, Lack of training in data collection, Changes to definitions and policies and maintaining data comparability, etc. It is important to provide training to staff involved in the collection of data, using data-related Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and improving the quality of demographic data within one data source” (Victorian Government, 2022).
