Assessment Description
Select an ethnic minority group that is represented in the United States (American
Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian American, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native
Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander). Using health information available from Healthy People, the
CDC, and other relevant government websites, analyze the health status for this group.
In a paper of 1,000-1,250 words, compare and contrast the health status of your selected
minority group to the national average. Include the following:
1. Describe the ethnic minority group selected. Describe the current health status of this
group. How do race and ethnicity influence health for this group?
2. What are the health disparities that exist for this group? What are the nutritional
challenges for this group?
3. Discuss the barriers to health for this group resulting from culture, socioeconomics,
education, and sociopolitical factors.
4. What health promotion activities are often practiced by this group?
5. Describe at least one approach using the three levels of health promotion prevention
(primary, secondary, and tertiary) that is likely to be the most effective in a care plan given
the unique needs of the minority group you have selected. Provide an explanation of why
it might be the most effective choice.
6. What cultural beliefs or practices must be considered when creating a care plan? What
cultural theory or model would be best to support culturally competent health promotion
for this population? Why?
Cite at least three peer-reviewed or scholarly sources to complete this assignment. Sources
should be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and
public health content.

Health Promotion in Minority Populations

Description of Minority Group ( like African Americans)
Now you can address this section of the rubric under this heading. According to the rubric, you will want to describe the ethnic minority group chosen and discuss how race and ethnicity influence overall health. Be sure to do some comparison to the national average. You will want at least one or two paragraphs under this heading. To obtain an excellent you will want to address all the items the rubric suggests Be sure to cite anything that needs to be cited. Remember that if something is paraphrased, is not your words or work, a citation will be needed.
Health Disparities and Nutritional Challenges
You will now want to address this rubric element with several paragraphs of text. This section asks you to describe health disparities and nutritional challenges. Be sure to cite what is needed as well. When the rubric asks for support for your statements, they are looking to see that you are citing your statements appropriately!
Barriers to Health
Again, now it will be time to address this element of the grading with a few paragraphs of text. This rubric element is asking you to identify barriers to health resulting from culture, socioeconomics, education, and political factors. Compare this to the national average. Again, be sure you are using the evidence and citing it to support what you are saying.
Health Promotion Activities
For this section, you will want to address any health promotion activities that your chosen minority group participates in. How does this compare to the national average or other populations. Be sure to look to the evidence and cite what is needed. Doing so shows you are supporting what you are saying by looking to the evidence.
Levels of Health Promotion
Again, look to the rubric to describe the needed elements. You will want to discuss a care plan with at least one approach ( primary, secondary, or tertiary) and describe how this plan will meet the needs of your chosen minority group. Again, be sure that you are using the evidence to provide evidence and give strength to your statements.
Culturally Competent Care
In this section you will write and discuss about cultural beliefs and practices and how they impact care. Be sure to choose a relevant cultural theory and apply it to your chosen group. Again, be sure to look to the evidence, provide citations and discuss how cultural competence is important.
Conclusion
Now conclude your paper with a concise paragraph that summarizes and wraps up the key points in your paper. Remember to be concise and keep this to about one paragraph in length.
