Statistics is the science of using math to collect and analyze numeric data, identify trends, and create evidence-based practice (Helbig & Ambrose, 2018). Statistics in healthcare is used to support empirical data to either support or disprove a hypothesis. Florence Nightingale used statistics to prove her correlation between sanitation and a decrease in mortality. By using quantifiable evidence, it was irrefutable and thus created a trend in the industry that is followed to this day.   

William Augustus Guy was a doctor in the 1800s that developed statistics for forensic medicine and his theories are used to this day (Brown, 2019). His book, “Principles of Forensic Medicine”, laid the foundation of probability in modern day forensics.

Post 4:

Statistics in Healthcare is important to understand because it is the result of data collection and analysis. To understand how something works or if it worked at all, statistics is how that conclusion is drawn. It is used to understand biostatistics, mortality rates, diagnoses, testing results, identify trends, and improve quality through quantifiable feedback (Helbig & Amnrose, 2018).    

In my office, we use statistics to identify drug interactions, side effects and drug delivery methods. For example, there are several studies on the statistics of patients developing an immune response to Botox or Dysport brands botulinum toxin. These brands have an addition protein in their formula in which your body could build antibodies to. This greatly affects how we treat new patients. According to the study by Steven Bellows and Joseph Jankovic, out of 235 patients new to botulinum toxin, 9.1% had primary resistance and 7.5% had secondary resistance (2019). What that means is that 9.1% of the patients in the test developed antibodies to the proteins which resulted in no neuromodulating results to the toxin by the first dose and 7.5% developed antibodies by the second dose. What this means is that since the risk of developing a permanent resistance to toxins is about 16.6% by the second treatment and as high as 30% eventually, we guide our new patients to try Xeomin which is a pure toxin formula and does not have that protein thus no resistance could be formed.

It is crucial for any person working in healthcare to understand statistical concepts. Healthcare practitioners need to be able to scrutinize the reports and documents circulated within the healthcare organizations. In the recent past, research and evidence-based practice have become standard practice in medicine. This automatically means that health institutions are operating with a significant amount of statistical data. Mastery of knowledge on; how to decipher statistical information and its application; aids healthcare personnel implement their research studies. Healthcare operations not centered on research are not thoroughly evaluated to determine their effectiveness in quality improvement initiatives leading to unsafe practices (Aggarwal, 2018).

In my hospital organization, there is a significant reliance on statistical data to keep up with medicine’s ever-changing field. I work as a nurse. Before the electronic medical record (EMR) system was implemented, an in-depth study was conducted to scrutinize this form of practice’s success levels and its viability in an institution like ours. We were expected to analyze the data and pick out the trends that we had observed. We used the trends to create assumptions of predictability. We reflected the probability of success to our organization and applied the conclusions in creating proper systems to facilitate a seamless transition to electronic medical records (Hall, 2017).

Statistics plays a crucial role in research, planning, and decision-making in health sciences, by providing essential information about the random structure of health phenomena. By identifying statistical trends and trails, health care providers can monitor local conditions and compare them to state, national, and international trends (Bartkowiak & Finnegan,2004). By understanding the statistical concepts healthcare workers can understand the reliability of data that can be transferred into practice, perform comparative studies on healthcare deliveries and outcomes, and provide validated evidence-based practices. Statistics in healthcare can provide valuable

Information about the health of the society and it enables medical professionals and public health officials to identify the status of health disparities among the members of populations. I worked in the neuroscience department where most of the patients are admitted due to stroke or TIAs. Stroke protocol must be followed while taking care of these patients. During the admission and discharge, we nurses must verify the dosage of statins ordered according to the LDL and HDL levels of the patients and educate the patients about the medications during the hospital stay and discharge. Many clinical trials have clearly demonstrated that statin reduces the risk of first and recurrent stroke. Statins have emerged as guideline therapy for primary and secondary stroke prevention. The results from several large randomized, double-blind trials have firmly established that statin use in ischemic stroke is associated with a reduced risk of incident and recurrent stroke (Zhao, Zhang, et al,2014). Statins have also been proved to significantly decrease cardiovascular risk and improve clinical outcomes (Zhao, Zhang, et al,2014).
