Statistics in healthcare is used to support empirical data to either support or disprove a hypothesis. Florence Nightingale used statistics to prove her correlation between sanitation and a decrease in mortality. By using quantifiable evidence, it was irrefutable and thus created a trend in the industry that is followed to this day.   

William Augustus Guy was a doctor in the 1800s that developed statistics for forensic medicine and his theories are used to this day (Brown, 2019). His book, “Principles of Forensic Medicine”, laid the foundation of probability in modern day forensics.

Statistics in Healthcare is important to understand because it is the result of data collection and analysis. To understand how something works or if it worked at all, statistics is how that conclusion is drawn. It is used to understand biostatistics, mortality rates, diagnoses, testing results, identify trends, and improve quality through quantifiable feedback (Helbig & Amnrose, 2018).    

In my office, we use statistics to identify drug interactions, side effects and drug delivery methods. For example, there are several studies on the statistics of patients developing an immune response to Botox or Dysport brands botulinum toxin. These brands have an addition protein in their formula in which your body could build antibodies to. This greatly affects how we treat new patients. According to the study by Steven Bellows and Joseph Jankovic, out of 235 patients new to botulinum toxin, 9.1% had primary resistance and 7.5% had secondary resistance (2019). What that means is that 9.1% of the patients in the test developed antibodies to the proteins which resulted in no neuromodulating results to the toxin by the first dose and 7.5% developed antibodies by the second dose. What this means is that since the risk of developing a permanent resistance to toxins is about 16.6% by the second treatment and as high as 30% eventually, we guide our new patients to try Xeomin which is a pure toxin formula and does not have that protein thus no resistance could be formed.
