It is possible to implement sustainable energy development, and utilize energy sources without causing harm to the environment. There are various ways of achieving sustainable energy use and one of these is through the use of renewable energy sources. These include solar electricity, solar heating, ocean energy, geothermal energy, hydropower, wind and other energy sources (Smil, 2014). The use of renewable energy enables society to utilize energy without harming the environment, since these energy sources are replenished naturally and cannot be depleted. Moreover, it is also possible for society to utilize non-renewable energy sources sustainably. This means that society can attain sustainable energy development through enhancing the efficiency of non-renewable energy while minimizing the negative impacts of these energy sources on the environment. For instance, using nuclear energy may be sustainable if it is effectively controlled to minimize environmental harm (Smil, 2014). Additionally, society may enhance its energy use through developing eco-friendly products, such as automobiles, that use minimal energy to safeguard sustainable energy development.
I do not believe that technology will play a key role in addressing demand for mineral resources. On the contrary, the growth of technology has increased the demand for mineral resources. For instance, according to the World Bank (2017), the growth of clean energy such as electric storage batteries has heightened demand for minerals such as cobalt, iron, aluminium, lithium, lead, nickel and manganese. The report states that countries with vast mineral resources will face an increased demand from technological advancement into green energy. However, mineral resources are also non-renewable and once demand increases, these resources may be depleted in future. Clean technology therefore presents a unique challenge since it consumes vast non-renewable mineral resources, yet at the same time, it p[resents opportunities for sustainable energy development.
