Elizabeth uqdah wrote a book that will help one understand how our minds work. The environment you grow in, people you interact with, the challenges you go through, and the activities you engage in all affect your mental state. Reading this book is refreshing. The author covered important topics and made me learn more about the human mind. The first thing I loved about this book, is the author’s style of writing. Elizabeth Uqdah writes in an ingenious way. Whatever subject she writes about is broken down for the simplest mind. She wrote this book for readers of all ages.
When talking about hidden thoughts, the author mentioned that it is important for one to free self from issues that keep you chained. She wrote about something that I pondered on for a while; Elizabeth Uqdah said that despite negative experiences trapping us mentally, we should strive to reflect on such problems and look for the easiest solutions. The author helped me think about my personal life and the things that trouble my mind.
The author used 15 cases to help us understand why the mind works the way it works. I loved reading her discussion in case 1. She talked about dysfunctions in the family when growing up. I appreciate how she used her life as an example as she explained why dysfunctions in the family can affect you from infancy to adulthood. The author wrote about her alcoholic father and the little love the family received from her father. The father abandoned the family, and in no time, Elizabeth Uqdah started feeling insignificant and invisible. The only hope they had was their mother.
The author’s mother was loving and made Elizabeth feel like she belongs. I loved the discussion that followed. The author wrote that despite one having low self-esteem in a situation where they are only loved by one parent, you should not project your insecurities or fear to everyone. Love the parent who loved you back. Also, show some affection to other people who were there to love you when one parent was absent. Turn the negative situations into positives, and in no time, your mental struggles will become minimum.

Through this book, one learns how people portray themselves depending on their background, and how they view themselves and the people around them. The book touches on the psychological side of families, friendships and other things like racism, economic and social status, education and culture. There is a lot to be learned from the book especially since the author wrote about subjects which everyone can relate to. Through this book, I was able to view the perspective of the average African-American woman, and how she deals with societal issues. The book deserves a 5/5 rating.
